Our Research

3D Cell Culture

Bennett and Aiden are focused on tracking alveolar type 1 cell differentiation from alveolar type 2 in 3D hydrogels created with decellularized ECM from idiopathic pulmonary fibrotic lungs.

Self-Repairing Lung Cells

Joy’s research focuses on mesenchymal stromal cells, which can be isolated from different human tissues and engineered to react in people’s immune systems to allows the lung to repair itself.

Shrink Wrap

A new project in lab, the Shrink Wrap Project aims to uncover a more inclusive treatment for individuals with cystic fibrosis. Click the link to learn more!

Avian Lung

Noah is working to decellularize and recellularize avian lungs with human lung cells. His research works towards a more effective long term lung assist device for patients needing transplant.

Stiffness and ECM

Ella is continuing research in the lab focused on understanding the effect of stiffness and extracellular matrix (ECM) coatings have on the growth of varying lung cells.

Microplastics

Attention has been drawn to microplastics and the threats they pose. Yet, there is still much to learn about their effect on the lungs. This project aims to uncover the extent of their impact.

Stretching Cells

Chika is looking into the role that mechanical cues play on the behavior of lung epithelial cells. Specifically, she is interested in isolating alveolar type 1 cells.

Pleural Sealant

This project works to adjust an existing burst pressure machine that can comprehensively test the efficacy of a novel pleural sealant to ensure the patch can successfully seal a hole in the lung.
